Do you need to detox your body regularly?

You've probably heard it all - detox teas, cleanses, and fasting diets promising to rid your body of toxins (we can save colon cleanses for another day💩🤮) and make you feel like a brand-new person, plus don’t forget about the weight loss that it promises… But do we really need these extreme measures to be healthy?

👇🏻My reaction when I see or hear the word "detox":

I swear my husband says the D word to wind me up!

đźš« Why this myth is unhelpful:

The word “detox” is a marketing ploy for your money. If you have a body, I mean I am sure you do… then you have a liver and kidneys whose role it is to detoxify your body. Our liver and kidneys do a remarkable job without the need for extreme detox diets. So anything that uses the D word - is a trap.

If fact, regular “detoxing” can lead to:

  • Nutrient deficiencies.

  • Disordered eating patterns, particularly binge eating due to over restriction and feeling stressed/anxious about food.

  • Unhealthy relationships with food, labelling food as good/bad, clean/dirty.

  • A sense of guilt and failure when you can't stick to an extreme, rigid detox plan.

  • A loss of money as these can be expensive!

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Balanced eating: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These foods provide the nutrients your body needs for optimal function.

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water (or water based drinks e.g. tea, coffee and juices all count!) helps your body flush out waste and toxins naturally.

  • Support your liver: Instead of overloading your system with detox products, prioritise liver health by moderating your alcohol consumption.

  • Work on your relationship with food: Instead of looking for quick fixes, that don’t stick long term. Work on your relationship with food and a more sustainable approach to food and health.

  • Save your money: and spend your time doing things you love, instead of sacrificing more years to these strict approaches.

Detoxing, a term heavily marketed in the diet industry, may not be what it claims to be. Not only does it often lead to disappointment and financial strain, but it can also negatively impact your relationship with food. The good news is that your body comes equipped with its own natural detox system, and we're here to guide you on how to support it.

So let's break free from the detox myth and celebrate our body's incredible ability to keep us healthy.
