The Truth About Oats

2023 was the era of so-called ‘influencers’ who were spreading fear about single foods, especially oats. I saw it, and it made me mad.

The fear around oats comes from it’s impact on blood glucose levels. Meaning that we should avoid oats (or anything oat-based) to avoid high blood glucose spikes.

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

This myth not only brings fear to one single food but actually, it brings fear to fluctuations of blood glucose spikes. To the point that people are purchasing blood glucose monitoring machines more than ever.

When we eat any type of carbohydrates (oats are carbohydrates) it is normal for the blood glucose levels to rise after we eat them.

That's when our pancreas releases insulin to help convert that blood glucose into energy. Without blood glucose spikes, we wouldn't have energy.

So the misconception that blood glucose spikes are inherently harmful can lead to unnecessary worry and anxiety.

*if you have type one diabetes or you use insulin/sulfonylureas (medication for your type 2 diabetes) - this is when blood glucose monitoring is important, more for the monitoring of low blood glucose levels which can be dangerous.

Now let’s get back to Oats. Oats are one of the most affordable, diverse and nutritious foods out there. Demonising such a versatile and beneficial ingredient serves no purpose to anyone!

🌟 What you could do instead:

Remember that blood glucose monitoring has become a trend, and unless you have diabetes, it might just become another number to stress you out unnecessarily. Why?

Because it will show that your blood glucose levels fluctuate, which is entirely normal!

Let’s recall all the fantastic reasons why oats deserve a special spot in your diet:

  • A type of soluble fibre that actively lowers cholesterol levels.

  • The fibre content aids in combatting bloating and promotes a healthy gut.

  • Oats provide a sustained release of energy, thanks to their low glycemic index, resulting in a gradual blood glucose spike.

  • Packed with essential vitamins and minerals, oats are a nutrient powerhouse.

  • They are affordable, versatile, and oh-so-tasty!

    😉 Toni’s Top Tip:

I live for overnight oats during the week. I make a week's worth on a Sunday afternoon and they last well till Friday. Minimising the amount of time preparing and making it super easy to have breakfast. I pair it with peanut butter and fruit!
