Do Bananas Have too Much Sugar?

You've probably heard that bananas are loaded with sugar, and you should stay clear of them if you're watching your diet. But is it true?

๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸปMy reaction when I hear this:

๐Ÿšซ Why this myth is unhelpful:

In my experience working with individuals managing their diabetes, I've seen firsthand how this myth can spark unnecessary worry. It's a stark reminder of how our world now demonises fruit. But when will this fruit-fearing madness end?

This myth encourages a black-and-white approach to food, causing unnecessary anxiety about the "sugar" in bananas while completely disregarding the multitude of benefits they offer.

Here's the deal: Yes, bananas contain "sugar," but it's the natural kind called fructose, found in all fruits and responsible for their delightful sweetness.

๐ŸŒŸ What you could do instead:

Eat the WHOLE banana! If you love bananas, I encourage you to eat them, and yes, not half of it, all of it. Here are 5 benefits of eating bananas:

  • Carbohydrates: Carbs provide the energy that makes bananas perfect for an on-the-go snack or even in a rush breakfast option, or to fuel before a workout.

  • Potassium: They are a great source of potassium which is good for your heart and kidney health.

  • Fibre:  The fibre in bananas helps with digestion but this also helps you keep fuller for longer. ๐Ÿšฝ

  • Vitamin C: which supports a healthy immune system.

  • Convenient and affordable: Bananas are easy to transport and you just need to peel them and you're good to go!

๐Ÿ˜‰ Toniโ€™s Top Tip:

For a hunger-reducing snack, team your bananas with a protein-rich food like Greek yoghurt or peanut butter.

This myth that bananas should be avoided due to their sugar content is dispelled, offering a more balanced perspective on these beloved fruits. Embracing the whole banana is not only safe but highly beneficial, as they provide essential carbohydrates for energy, potassium for heart and kidney health, fiber for digestion and satiety, and vitamin C for a strong immune system. Their convenience and affordability make them an ideal snack. So, there's no need to fear the natural fructose found in bananas; instead, relish the wholesome goodness they bring to your diet.
