Is Fresh the Best Option?

You have probably been told that fresh fruit and veg beats tinned, frozen and dried options, but is that true?

My reaction to this advice πŸ‘‡πŸ»

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

This myth can make you feel like anything less than fresh is a compromise on nutrition. In reality, fresh fruits can be expensive and have a shorter shelf life, often leading to unnecessary food waste.

It also tends to overlook the value of frozen, canned, or dried options, which can be equally (if not more) nutritious. Insisting on fresh fruit and vegetables can feel like a fairytale, but the reality is not everyone can afford it. Other options are more budget-friendly, accessible to all and packed full of nutrients (if not more).

Take frozen and canned options, for instance. They're often harvested at their peak, then promptly frozen or canned, locking in their prime nutritional value. In contrast, fresh fruits and vegetables can travel across the globe, losing nutritional value by the time they reach your plate.

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Embrace Variety: Include a mix of fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruits and veggies in your diet. They all have their unique perks and can keep your meals exciting.

  • Convenience Matters: Don't dismiss the convenience of frozen or canned options. They can save time, reduce food waste, and provide nutrients year-round.

  • Cost-Effective Choices: Sometimes, fresh produce can be pricey, especially out of season. Opting for other forms that can be budget-friendly is still going to have a positive impact on your health.

My favourite and a great one to add to your list, frozen spinach. It makes it super easy to add extra veggies to my curries and stir fries without throwing away half the fresh bag after a few days of being open!

It's time to break free from the notion that being fresh is the only way. A mix of fresh and other forms can be not only nutritious but also practical and sustainable.
