Is it Realistic to be Body Positive?

It's all too easy to fall into the trap of believing that if we're not 100% in love with our bodies 100% of the time, we're somehow falling short. But here's the reality check: struggling with body image is incredibly common and doesn't make you a failure or indicate that something is wrong with you.

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

Buying into this myth only adds self-doubt and self-criticism to deal with.

It perpetuates the harmful idea that our worth is tied to our appearance and sets unrealistic standards for how we should feel about ourselves. The truth is, that our relationship with our bodies is complex and ever-evolving, and it's okay to have moments of struggle along the way.

Struggling with your body is normal and you can’t tell by looking at someone if they are happy or unhappy with their body.

Body image can fluctuate: some days the inner voice can be extra loud so you have to give yourself some extra self-care and kindness when these hit.

Life is already hard and dealing with thoughts about our body is just adding fuel to the fire.

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Build on your self-compassion: Instead of beating yourself up for not meeting unrealistic standards that have been pushed on us try to practice self-compassion and treat yourself with kindness and understanding.

  • Focus on what your body CAN do: Shift your perspective from how your body looks to what it can do. Celebrate its strength, resilience, and the amazing things it enables you to accomplish every day. This can be as simple as hugging a loved one or laughing with friends.

  • Practice gratitude: Take time each day to acknowledge and appreciate your body for all it does for you. Practice gratitude for its abilities, resilience, and the unique qualities that make you who you are.
