Do you just need to ‘eat less and move more’?

There are so many people (or should I say “influencers”) who say how easy it is to lose weight and push the just “eat less and move more” message. But is it really that simple?

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

Reducing health to a simple equation of calories in versus calories out oversimplifies the complex relationship between food, movement, and health.

It also ignores the multitude of factors that influence our health, including genetics, metabolism, socioeconomic status, and mental health.

Moreover, this "eat less, move more" mantra can perpetuate harmful attitudes towards food and exercise, leading to disordered eating behaviours such as restricting whole food groups and unsustainable fitness practices like no resting.

It fails to address the root causes of weight gain and overlooks the importance of nourishing our bodies with balanced nutrition and joyful movement.

This “eat less and move more” message is a huge red flag in my eyes!

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Instead of fixating on restrictive dieting and punishing exercise regimens, let's adopt a more gentle, compassionate and realistic approach to health. This will likely make it more long-term sustainable so you can meet those health goals without running yourself into the ground.

  • Focus on regularly eating and eating food that makes you feel good from the inside out. Do you notice that you get more energy from food? Do you notice you get a nice amount of full from food without it feeling meh? That's what we are aiming for.

  • Similarly, embrace movement in a joyful and empowering way, whether it's dancing to your favourite songs at home, walking in nature, or practising yoga. Shift your mindset from exercise as punishment to movement as a celebration of what your body can do.

😉 Toni’s Top Tip:

Your worth is not determined by the food you eat or the hours spent sweating in the gym.

True health includes physical, mental, and emotional, and it's achieved through self-compassion, balance, self-care and compassion.
