The problem with "eat less and move more"

It's a phrase we've all heard, often touted as the golden rule for weight loss and health. But is it really that simple?

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

This message reduces health to a simple equation of calories in versus calories out, which oversimplifies the complex relationship between food, movement, and health.

It ignores the amount of factors that influence our health, including genetics, metabolism, socioeconomic status, and mental health.

Moreover, this "eat less, move more" mantra can perpetuate harmful attitudes towards food and exercise, leading to disordered eating behaviours and unsustainable fitness practices.

It fails to address the root causes of weight gain and overlooks the importance of nourishing our bodies with balanced nutrition and joyful movement.

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Instead of fixating on restrictive dieting and punishing exercise regimens, try adopting a more gentle, compassionate and realistic approach to health. This will likely make it more long-term sustainable so you can meet those health goals without running yourself into the ground.

  • Focus on regularly eating and eating food that makes you feel good from the inside out. Do you notice that you get more energy from food? Do you notice you get a nice amount of full from food without it feeling meh? That's what we are aiming for.

  • Embrace movement in a joyful and empowering way, whether it's dancing to your favourite songs at home, walking in nature, or practising yoga. Shift your mindset from exercise as punishment to movement as a celebration of what your body can do.
