Will Losing Weight Improve Your Body Image?

It's a common belief that if we just change our bodies – whether it's through dieting or exercising, all our body image woes will magically disappear. Is that true though?

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

Holding onto the belief that changing our bodies will bring happiness only keeps us stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction. It reinforces the harmful notion that our worth is tied to our appearance, making us feel like we’re never enough. This myth can lead to endless striving and unnecessary suffering.

In my 1:1 sessions, I often reflect with clients on how they felt when they were at their lowest weight. So many times, they share that they still didn't feel good enough, despite achieving what they thought would bring them happiness. This is a powerful reminder that true contentment and acceptance come from inside, not what we look like.

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Shift your focus: Instead of always focusing on changing your body, focus on how you feel on the inside. Engage in activities and with people that make you feel good.

  • Practice self-compassion: By treating yourself like you would a close friend. Understand we all have imperfections and insecurities and that's what makes you, YOU.

  • Remember it's OK to have days where you don’t feel great about yourself: Be extra kind to yourself on these days. It's normal to have ups and downs, and treating yourself gently and with understanding during tougher times is important.

Reflect on the reasons why your friends are friends with you. It’s never about what you look like – it’s always about the type of person you are. Your kindness, humour, and authenticity are what truly matter.
