Is Grazing a Dietary Sin?

Today, we embark on a journey to demystify a prevalent nutrition myth: "Grazing is a bad thing."

Buckle up as we explore the nuances of this often-misunderstood concept, unraveling the truth about grazing and its impact on our dietary habits.

My response to diet culture making women feel guilty about grazing:

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

Let's break it down—some folks believe that grazing throughout the day is a dietary sin. But is it really?

Grazing can get a bad rap. Constant snacking doesn't necessarily equal unhealthy habits. Grazing can be a natural way of eating, helping to maintain energy levels and prevent overeating during main meals.

At the end of the day, there is not one specific way to eat, and especially this time of year when food is everywhere, it’s a normal behaviour and nothing to feel guilty about.

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Make sure you eat enough across the day: If you havent eaten enough across the day (3 meals and 2-3 snacks or 5-6 small meals/snacks/day), then if you are around food, you are going to feel compelled to graze and it might even feel like a binge.

  • Opt for nutrient dense snacks: I help my clients choose snacks that are extra fulfilling and satisfying. These normal include 2-3 different food groups. My favourite satisfying snack combo is crisps with a dip. Sometimes I love salsa or maybe I would choose a hummus or garlic mayo. Crisps always left me wanting more, that's why pairing snacks can be extra fulfilling.

  • Learn that its a normal behaviour: Whether you find that you are a grazer generally, or just time of year, that might be just how you eat sometimes, and what works best for you. Not need to include any sides of guilt or shame about that!

Grazing isn't necessarily a bad thing—it's all about how you approach it. Listen to your body, choose nutrient-dense options, and practise mindful grazing for a positive relationship with food.
