Does a high BMI make you unhealthy?

You've probably heard it before – the idea that your Body Mass Index (BMI) dictates your health status. But here's the thing: it's not that simple! Health is very complex and basing it off this measurement doesn’t actually give us the bigger picture…

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

The BMI Doesn’t Equal Health. Here is why…

  • The BMI fails to consider many aspects of health, like age, gender, muscle mass, ethnicity, specific health markers and habits you might have.

  • The truth is, there are plenty of people with a higher BMI who are perfectly healthy. They may exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, and have no underlying health conditions. Conversely, there are also people with a lower BMI who may struggle with health issues.

  • Using a measure that was never intended to determine individual health is unreliable and leads to bad healthcare. Using BMI as the sole indicator of health can lead to harmful stereotypes and stigmatisation.

It's time to shift the focus away from numbers on a scale and towards a bigger picture of health.

🌟 What you could do instead:

Instead of fixating or worrying about your BMI: Let's focus on overall health, including your mental health.

This means adopting healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, stress management, and getting enough sleep.

It's about listening to your body and taking care of yourself in a way that feels good for you which will improve your health.

😉 Toni’s Top Tip:

Remember, your worth is not determined by your BMI or any number on a scale.
