Can You Reach Your Health Goals Without Rigid Rules and Restrictions?

For many people, especially those who have been dieting for years, the idea of letting go of strict rules can be terrifying.

You might feel that without these guidelines, you’ll lose control over your eating habits and your health will suffer as a result. This fear can make you cling to diets, believing that rigid restrictions are the only way to stay healthy.

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

The idea that strict rules and restrictions are the only way to achieve health goals can lead to a lot of stress, anxiety, and feelings of failure. Diet culture teaches us that without rigid guidelines, we won't have the discipline needed to be healthy. This myth can make you feel trapped in an endless cycle of starting and failing diets, leaving you frustrated and disheartened.

However, the truth is that strict rules are often unsustainable in the long term and can create an unhealthy relationship with food. They can lead to binge eating, feelings of deprivation, and an obsession with food. This constant battle can harm your mental and physical health more than it helps.

Strict rules ignore the natural cues and rhythms of your body, making it difficult to listen to what your body truly needs. This can result in yo-yo dieting and a never-ending struggle with food and weight.

🌟 What you could do instead:

Work with someone (like me!) for guidance and support: Transitioning away from dieting can feel overwhelming, especially when there's a misconception that it means letting go of everything at once. But instead, it's about taking gradual, sustainable steps towards a healthier relationship with food.

Redefine what health means to you: Health isn't just a number on the scale or fitting into a certain size. It's about feeling good in your body, having energy, and enjoying life. Focus on nourishing your body with foods you love, moving in ways that feel good, and taking care of your mental and emotional health. IIf dieting is causing you a lot of stress, it’s time to think if dieting is your idea of health.

😉 Toni’s Top Tip:

Remember, you don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. Small, consistent changes can lead to big improvements in your relationship with food and your overall health. Start with one step, and you'll be amazed at how far you can go.
