Do Glucose Spikes Increase the Risk of Diabetes?

This myth swirls around "The Glucose Goddess" and her new "anti-spike pill," priced at a hefty £50 a month.

But is this pill the magical solution to prevent diabetes?

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

In reality, there's no such thing as a magic pill in the world of health. Diabetes is a complex condition, and the idea that "eating too much sugar" directly leads to diabetes lacks solid research evidence.

This fearmongering tactic creates unnecessary anxiety around normal bodily responses to food. The Glucose Goddess capitalizes on this fear, only to offer her pricey solution as the cure.

This is a red flag for diet culture. 🚩

Even as someone well-versed in scientific research, I've been taken aback by the convincing arguments and confident presentations of the Glucose Goddess. But let's debunk this together...

While each ingredient in her supplement may have individual research backing, combining them requires evidence of efficacy as a whole. Without such evidence, the effectiveness of her product remains uncertain.

🌟 What you could do instead:

Concerned about glucose spikes and diabetes risk? Here are practical tips to support your health without breaking the bank:

  • Spread meals throughout the day to stabilise blood glucose levels.

  • Pair carbohydrates with other food groups to minimise spikes and increase satisfaction. My favourite pairings are:

    • Crisps or popcorn with cheese

    • Fruit with peanut butter

  • Incorporate movement after eating to help regulate glucose levels.

😉 Toni’s Top Tip:

As a former diabetes dietitian, I understand the temptation to monitor glucose levels for insight into your body's signals. However, unless you have diabetes and are on medication affecting glucose levels, monitoring serves little purpose.

Tracking can lead to fixation on numbers, causing unnecessary stress and anxiety around food.

Save your money and avoid unproven solutions!
